We all of us have heard about this quote many times in our life but have ever thought about the real meaning of this quote.
The word comes from Latin phrase, ob portum veniens “coming toward a port”. It exactly means to think of an opportunity as something a good wind blew your way.
Opportunity is the chance everyone of us get in our life in the form of achievement and knocks our door many times like it is reminding us to be a part of success
Many times the situation comes to us which makes it possible to do something great that you want to do in your life.
What does it mean to see opportunity as success instead of looking at it as difficulties?
No Matter how much the obstacles are around us, if we try to overcome them in our way, then it will lead to our strong mindset. The only thing becomes important is we will need to depend upon the mental toughness looking ourselves as a heroes.
Mental toughness gives us the courage to grow from the stress we experience in life. It is a mindset comprised of several qualities and attitude.
Whenever we set our goals and start climbing the success ladder what happens, we are very excited since it is our interesting niche and climbing first step thinking about our goal we are out of our thinking, But then again if we climb second step we start about our goal bit thinking and then climbing third step we stop thinking about our comfort zone that what are we doing that means we think what to do achieving this success we are wasting our life instead we will create our happy life and live in it.
Do you know who speaks this with us, NO ONE IT IS JUST OUR WEAK MIND WHO SAYS YOU CANNOT DO THIS, THIS IS NOT YOUR WORK, YOU ARE NOT CAPABLE OF ACHIEVING THIS GOAL SO JUST GET DOWN OR YOU WILL FALL”
And we start listening and agreeing our mind.
This not only happens with you and me, but it happens with everyone of us.
Once you stop listening to our mind, we will definitely achieve our goals but we do not understand.
Many peoples listen to the mind and turn away from their goals.
This exactly is the Pareto principle rule of 80/20 which states that 20% of the people takes away the percentage of 80% peoples.
Which means 80% losers listen to their weak mind and stop there But 20% of successful peoples achieve goals inspite of the problems and disagreeing their weak mind.
This exactly we want to fulfil the gap of listening to weak mind and instead keep growing with STRONG MINDSET.
You may think of the 80-20 rule as simple cause and effect: 80% of outcomes (outputs) come from 20% of causes (inputs). The rule is often used to point out that 80% of a company’s revenue is generated by 20% of its customers.
What exactly is required to achieve success - Opportunity?
This question reminds me of the story of Bear Grylls. Here we go with the story…
Edward Michael “Bear” Grylls was a British former SAS trooper, an survival expert, adventurer, and television presenter.
Bear grew up on the Isle of Wight in the UK and was educated at Eton College and the University of London. From a young age he learned to climb and sail with his father. After leaving school, he joined the Territorial Army (UK Army Reserves).
His limits, acquires an opportunity to be served in the British Special Forces, in the 21st SAS regiment from 1994 to 1997. There he was trained as a soldier in hand-to-hand combat, desert and winter warfare, survival, climbing, parachuting and explosives.
Later he became a survival instructor and was sent on two missions to North Africa. His service in the British Special Forces came to a dramatic end with a serious parachute accident in 1996. His parachute did not open, he survived but broke three vertebrae
“Why is it that the finish line always tends to appear just after the point at which we most want to give up? Is it the universe’s way of reserving the best for those who can give the most?
But this accident did not stop him, of course Bear Grylls was a sportsman, but where he shines the most is in his philosophy. At this point in his life, at 21, Bear is full of dreams, like becoming the youngest person to climb Everest and discover the world. He knew that with three broken vertebrae he would not achieve his dreams, so he fought to get back on his feet as soon as possible.
Grylls was still with a BURNING DESIRE, achieved his childhood dream of climbing to the summit of Mount Everest in Nepal, 18 months after breaking three vertebrae in a parachuting accident.
Only 18 months after his skydiving accident, young Bear Grylls travelled to Nepal to try to get to the top of the world. On 16 May 1998, aged just 23, the former SAS serviceman climbed Everest, the world’s highest mountain at 8,849 metres high (≃29,000 feet). At the time, he was the youngest person to achieve this feat. A record that will be beaten by a handful of climbers, the record being held by Jordan Romero, who reached the summit at only 13 years old, good luck to those who wish to beat it.
Climbing Everest was Bear’s childhood dream, a dream that almost cost him his life twice. His adventure in Nepal lasted three months. To begin with, 4 climbers died while Grylls was there, 2 froze to death and 2 fell, enough to discourage the average person.
He says “special forces gave me the self-confidence to do some extraordinary things in my life. Climbing Everest then cemented my belief in myself.“
It seems that Everest wasn’t enough for Bear Grylls, so in 2003 he decided to conquer the Atlantic with 4 other people.
“There was nothing we could do apart from saying our prayers and hold on to each other and to that boat and pray we came through it, which we did but it was a truly terrifying experience” says Bear Grylls.
Grylls’ goal was to fly over Everest in a parameter, but he was not allowed to fly anywhere around Chomolangma Feng 1 because of Chinese airspace. Bear therefore flew next to the roof of the world in the Himalayas without detracting him from his achievement.
The air was very thin and the temperature was -60°C (-76°F) at this altitude. The previous record in this category was 6,102 metres (≃20,000 feet), so Bear beat the previous record by a wide margin. The event was broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK and on Discovery Channel in the rest of the world.
During the mission, Grylls and his team had almost a death experience again. Bear explains that they faced a huge force 8 storm 800 km (≃500 miles) off the coast of Greenland that nearly capsized the small boat.
The young adventurer almost fell into a crevasse too while at 5,800 metres (≃19,000 feet). Fortunately, his rope-mate managed to hold on before he fell completely and die. He also almost got caught in an avalanche that would most likely have killed him, it only passed 30 metres away from him
He was 23, the record has since been surpassed by Jake Meyer and then Rob Gauntlet who summitted at age 19. To prepare for climbing at such high altitudes in the Himalayas, in 1997, Grylls became the youngest Briton to climb Ama Dablam, a peak once described by Sir Edmund Hillary as “unclimbable”, although now the third most popular in the Himalayas for permitted expeditions.
When this DESIRE, or impulse of thought, first flashed into his mind he was in no position to act upon it. Two difficulties stood in his way. He did not know did not have enough money to pay his railroad fare to Orange, New Jersey. These difficulties were sufficient to have discouraged the majority of men from making any attempt to carry out the desire.
Conclusion
Bear Grylls had a remarkable career and still his quotes are truly inspiring today. Even now, he continues to do charity work, broadcast and communicate these values.
Story ends up with Bear’s motto holding the opportunity for achieving success, which, despite its ease, sums up the man’s life rather well.
“Grab the Opportunity… and never give up!”
Hope this story helps…
Opportunities don’t just take place. We have to make them happen, and have to be take action at the same time.
One of my friends had worked for many years as a civil engineer which involved travelling a lot to different job sites, he would be on a job for two to four months, and then on to a new job. He didn’t have a home. That was really fun when he was younger, but eventually he wanted to settle down in one place. He ended up working for a construction insurance company, qualified by his construction experience. He figured out that if he learned his job, and then trained someone else to do it, he could move up. He would go to his boss and say “I want this promotion!” The boss would say “You’re too important to me, I can’t lose you” and he would say “I’ve already trained my replacement!” Then he achieved promotion. It works for him and promoted from junior to senior level. Then he started his own company.
